Thunderbolt 3 ports differ to the Thunderbolt 1 and 2 ports

Here are some things you can do with a USB-C Thunderbolt 3 port today:

  • transmit data at a rate of 40 Gbps
  • output video to two 4K monitors at 60 Hz
  • charge smartphones and most laptops with up to 100 watts of power
  • connect to an external GPU (unless it’s been blocked by the manufacturer)

The original Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 interfaces use mini DisplayPort-shaped connectors, which mean that they are entirely incompatible with any USB port.
